A new docuseries begins streaming July 10 on AppleTV+ featuring some of the most popular athletes from a variety of sports over the past decade.  When you think of names like LeBron James and Tom Brady, "greatness" easily comes to mind.  But what if you asked them about a great moment in their career?  What stands out to some of the greatest athletes of a generation in their own minds.  The Greatness Code, available on AppleTV+ aims to peel back those layers.

As someone who has loved watching sports my entire life, I was pretty excited to have the opportunity to screen this series ahead of it's release.  Here is a list of the athletes you'll see in Season 1 of the series.

  • Episode 1 - LeBron James (Basketball)
  • Episode 2 - Tom Brady (Football)
  • Episode 3 - Alex Morgan (Soccer)
  • Episode 4 - Usain Bolt (Track & Field)
  • Episode 5 - Shaun White (Snowboarding)
  • Episode 6 - Katie Ledecky (Swimming)
  • Episode 7 - Kelly Slater (Surfing)

The intimate sit down with the athletes sounded like the ideal setting to learn more about their careers through their eyes.  However, the short episodes left little storytelling time.  At just 5 to 8 minutes each, each episode picks one game to focus on and has the athlete talking about how that game impacted their career.  I guess the concept works for those who want just a quick sneak peek at their story, but I wanted more.  I also found the graphics and visual effects to be a bit distracting to what was happening.

Now my 8-year old son on the other hand LOVED this!  He watched the episodes with me - knowing 3 of the athletes (James, Brady, and Morgan) already and being introduced to the others along the way.  Tom Brady was his favorite episode and he when I asked what he like about the series his response was a simple, kid-friendly "I like everything about it!"

You can roll through these episodes very quickly and in an evening hear from these rockstars in their field.  If you're looking for something to fill the sports void and like hearing a little "behind-the-scenes" commentary from the athletes themselves, then check it out.  Just know what it is going in and enjoy it for that.
