Bringing to life the pages of a book to the big screen is no small task, but to a young Tre Peart it was not insurmountable. Tre finished reading the book, The War with Grandpa written by Robert Kimmel Smith, and had the idea to turn the book into a movie. He pitched the idea to his parents who happen to be movie producers and the wheels started turning! Now the hard work has paid off and The War with Grandpa is set to open in theaters on October 9th! I had the chance to join other family entertainment writers and sit down with the Peart family as part of a virtual press junket for the movie.
Tre Peart was just 11 years old as the film was being produced, but he didn't just sit on the sidelines of the film. His involvement in the film is actually going to land him with a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest executive producer ever! In fact, asking Robert DeNiro to star in the film as Grandpa Ed was his idea! And as you can imagine, getting Robert DeNiro involved with the film drew other big names like Christopher Walken according to Tre's dad, producer Marvin Peart.
I was excited to be able to ask a question during this interview myself where the Peart family shared their favorite scene to see come to life. Their answer was no surprise to me - the dodgeball scene! If you haven't seen the trailer yet, you can catch a sneak peek of that scene down below. Working with the actors and their stunt doubles to blend the scene together seamlessly was both a challenge and a rewarding task. It's also really fun to watch!
The entire Peart family was absolutely delightful to talk with and they are a family full of talent. We were all really excited when they shared at the end of the interview about the possibility of a sequel to The War with Grandpa. Hopefully we'll see this all-star cast and production team reunited in the future. In the meantime, take a look at the entire interview below.
