Secret Society of Second Born Royals - Image from Disney+

Disney has a long history of producing high quality tween/teen movies that release direct to TV screens for young viewers to enjoy.  High School Musical, Descendants, Teen Beach Movie, Zombies, and many more demonstrate the power of teens, friends, and teamwork.  The latest Disney movie adventure, Secret Society of Second Born Royals is no exception!  This great new family film released to Disney+ on September 25th and I'm excited to share it lived up to expectations!

Secret Society of Second Born Royals Movie Review

In the movie, we meet Sam - a princess who doesn't quite fit the royal mold.  The youngest of two daughters, she's preparing to see her sister take the throne, but is struggling to figure out how she fits into the world around her. Needless to say, the rock star clothing and sneaking out in the evenings raises some eyebrows around the castle.  And Sam is noticing some strange phenomena too that she's struggling to figure out.  In an effort to provide some structure to her daughter's life, the queen sends her off to the worse place imaginable. . .summer school.  But summer school isn't what it seems as Sam quickly discovers that all of the students there are second born royals too and they've been brought together to form something incredible.

The story in this film is quick paced while also remaining easy to follow - both very important for young viewers.  The crime solving theme of these young "superhero" royals easily appeals to families across a wide range of ages making this a great choice for family night.  Familiar themes with other Disney films, like teamwork, self-awareness, and breaking stereotypes are also found in this movie.  The power of family is another resounding theme as the truth behind the past of Sam's family comes to light and she must learn to live with the truth that has been hidden from her for so long. The young cast does a great job in their roles.  I was particularly excited to see Niles Fitch in the movie, you know, young Randall from This Is Us.

Looking for more family movies released exclusively on Disney+?  Check out Phineas and Ferb: Candace Against the Universe and The One and Only Ivan.

Overall, this is a great choice for families on Disney+ and viewers who have appreciated and enjoyed previous Disney Channel original movies should find the same positive messaging, catchy storylines, and memorable characters that we've come to expect from these films.  I'm also really excited to think about where the story could go from here as the end was left open for sequels!
