With old pals like Patrick, SpongeBob, and Sandy Cheeks to name just a few, this new musical adventure brings the characters out of the animated world and onto a stage to share the latest adventure under-the-sea.
Thank you to our friends at Nickelodeon, Paramount Home Entertainment, and Team Click for providing us with a DVD copy to review and share with you! As always, opinions are my own!
The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! DVD Review
I have to admit that I was personally a little skeptical going into this one. My son enjoys watching SpongeBob Squarepants, but I wasn't sure how the show would transition to a stage production. I was surprised how quickly the live performance captivated my little guy and had me smiling and singing along!
The musical tells the story of a volcano about to erupt and the citizens must work together to save each other. Who will they follow though? SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy Cheeks have a plan to protect Bikini Bottom, but the evil Plankton has a plan of his own. Will SpongeBob and his friends be able to save the day AND their home? Or is he really just a "simple sponge"?
While it's admittedly a challenge to bring together such eclectic cartoon characters in a live stage show, the production does incredibly well with costuming to make it very easy to identify each of the characters. I also noticed that in the sing-a-long version of the show, they have an animated character serving as the bouncing image that follows the words - it was really cute! I don't think my 5 year old moved a muscle while he watched this and he can't wait to watch again. There's a number of good songs and, as always, important messages for kids - teamwork, bullying, expectations, and much more. I think the most powerful takeaway is in the realm of expectations. There are several characters who battle who they are against what their family or the community expects them to be. It's an important message for little ones to hear about being true to yourself, and is presented in a way that's easy for them to understand.
If you're in the mood for laughter, love, and lyrical adventures, definitely check out The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage! with your little ones. It's a great choice that the whole family will enjoy. The DVD is available to purchase beginning November 3, 2020!
