At the beginning of the movie, we meet Jeronicus Jangle and his lovely wife and daughter. The movie begins with a show-stopping musical number, This Day, and viewers will be happy to know that more great music follows throughout the film. Jeronicus and his family live a truly magical life creating inventions at Jangles and Things. But one day, his trusted apprentice Gustafson, betrays him - stealing his newest magical creation and the plans for many other inventions. Jeronicus begins to struggle financially and then the death of his wife launches him into a depression that he can't seem to pull himself out of. Pushing his daughter away too, Jeronicus vows to never invent again and struggles to survive as a pawn broker in the same shop that used to be filled with magic, laughter, and fun. Just when all hope seems lost and Jeronicus is on the brink of losing everything if he doesn't come up with money to pay back a bank loan or an exciting new invention by Christmas morning, his granddaughter Journey enters his life. Journey had heard stories about her grandfather, but never met him. She is imaginative, full of heart, and believes in her grandfather. But will it be enough to save Jeronicus and his business?

There is so much to enjoy with this film that it's hard to pick where to begin. The whole production of the film is simply stunning. The musical numbers are large scale and feature powerful vocals as well as meaningful lyrics. In addition, the costumes jump off the screen - the colors, textures, and patterns are amazing! The cast perfectly captures each of their character. Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker plays Jeronicus Jangle and he is able to bring the depth to life that this character has - he may be flawed and broken, but that light and imaginative sparkle still live inside him. I'm a big fan of Keegan-Michael Key who plays Gustafson with his over-the-top flair and pompous attitude that really hide a person who deep down lacks self-confidence. And then there is the amazing Madalen Mills who stars as Journey. Her wide eyed optimism and tell-it-like-it-is attitude shine as a girl who is confident, smart, and knows how to go after what she wants as she sings "watch me become who I'm supposed to be!"
