Family and football. For Ray McElrathbey these are the two of the most important things in his life. When he heads to Clemson on a football scholarship, he can't even begin to guess what lies just around the corner as his life takes the most unexpected of turns. In what can best be described as a feel-good family drama, Safety runs onto Disney+ with the full power of an offensive lineman.
Safety Movie Review
Safety is a movie that captures the true story of Ray McElrathbey (Jay Reeves) who heads off to Clemson on a football scholarship. The true definition of a scholar athlete carrying a full 18 credit load as a freshman, he works hard at his studies and his sport to be successful. A phone call one evening with his brother changes everything though. He realizes things aren't good at home and discovers that his brother is living in dangerous conditions following his mom's incarceration for drug possession. When his mom is moved to an inpatient rehab facility, his younger brother Fahmarr (Thaddeus J. Mixson) is at risk of being put into the foster system. Ray decides this isn't an option for his brother and makes a quick decision to bring Fahmarr to Clemson with him. The road they travel during Ray's freshman football season is rocky at best but they learn that while family means a lot of different things, it is always the most important.

This movie tugs at your heartstrings and I have to say, I can't believe the power of this story. As I watched the film, it was hard for me to believe this was real. The love, dedication, and commitment in Safety is the stuff incredible stories are made of - and this one just happens to be real. In a year with so much negativity and divisiveness, seeing a film that focuses on the love of family - both the family we have by blood and the family we find in our everyday life - is refreshing and heartwarming. I definitely recommend sticking around through the credits where you can see some footage of the real coverage given to Ray during his football career.

The excitement and energy of the football balances the deep and complex emotions you'll experience with what is going on off the field in Ray's life. My husband and I made this one a grown-up movie night, but I think my 8 year old would enjoy the movie as well and would have no concerns with him seeing it. There is discussion of drug addiction, prison, and the foster system, but while questions may arise from younger viewers, these are all handled delicately in the film and can be good topics of discussion.

Overall, Safety is a great choice for a movie night on Disney+. I wouldn't recommend the film for your youngest Disney+ viewers as it will probably be over their heads and they'll struggle to stay engaged, but middle elementary school and up should have no concerns. Gather your family, grab a football, sport your Clemson orange and enjoy the movie!
