Wolfwalkers - AppleTV+ Family Movie Review

Wolfwalkers, an Apple Original Film, begins streaming on December 11th and is available on AppleTV+.  I have to say that watching the trailer and previews for this film left me uncertain about whether or not it was something my family was going to enjoy.  It's certainly different than most of the films we watch together - hand drawn animation and a mythical story from Europe - but we decided to give it a chance.  Would Wolfwalkers exceed our expectations and rise to the level of great quality programming we've come to expect from AppleTV+?

Wolfwalkers - Movie Review

As the movie begins we meet Robyn, a young English girl living in an Irish town with her father.  She longs to be a hunter just like her father and save the town from the dangerous wolves.  "Wolf, wolf, kill the wolf" the townspeople would taunt and chant.  Despite her dad's wishes, Robyn enters the unknown of the woods and encounters a magical Wolfwalker.  The most unusual of friendships follows and it challenges what both girls think about the other and "their kind."  Robyn and Mebh join forces to try to save Mebh's mothers and all of the wolves in the forest.

I am so happy that I put my first impression aside and gave this movie a chance as it's honestly one of the best animated films I've seen all year.  The story is a powerful tale of challenging beliefs, accepting others, friendship, and family.  I was quickly drawn into the movie as was my 8 year old son who is honestly becoming harder and harder to impress by the day. . .especially with animated movies.  The storyline is action packed, and while clearly mythical in nature, there is something that feels believable about it.

Aside from the story, the animation is simply breathtaking.  Again, it's different than what we are used to seeing in animated movies these days which I think made me appreciate it's beauty even more.  Watching the movie, it felt like you were watching the pages of storybook come to life right in front of your eyes.

Like the characters in the movie, I learned that first impressions aren't always accurate.  Wolfwalkers is phenomenal and a must watch for families on AppleTV+.  I wouldn't be surprised to hear awards talk around this film for it's beauty, originality, and artistry.  Kids will be enthralled with the story while adults will enjoy the unique way this story is brought to life.  It truly has something for the whole family to enjoy.  Wolfwalkers begins streaming on AppleTV+ on December 11, 2020.
