The 2021 New York International Children's Film Festival is home to so many great movies and I'm excited to spotlight some of my favorites!  I watched Sisters: The Summer We Found Our Superpowers opening weekend of the festival.  All the way from Norway, Sisters: The Summer We Found Our Superpowers tells a story of two sisters who find themselves on an adventure beyond their wildest dreams.

Sisters: The Summer We Found Our Superpowers Movie Review

Two young sisters, Billie and Vega, find themselves on a journey that challenges, teachers, and inspires them every step of the way in Sisters: The Summer We Found Our Superpowers.  We meet Billie and Vega as they are preparing for a hiking trip with their dad.  Prior to setting off on their hike, the family stops to visit their mom who is in a hospital, "resting."  While the girls are clearly worried about their mother, they look forward to a "fairy tale" adventure with their dad on their magical hike.  Things take an unexpected turn though when their father ends up falling into a hole, injuring himself and unable to climb out.  The girls are on their own in the unfamiliar terrain to try and find help.  With no cell phone and no maps, they rely on each other to try and save themselves, their dad, and their family.

The movie is Norwegian with English subtitles which made it difficult for my kids to follow along with as subtitles aren't something they follow easily.  However, the film is absolutely beautiful.  There are some scenes where they are in the flower fields and you just feel like you're right there with them.  I found the story to be captivating and believable while also being magical.  The young stars shine with their performances as they showcase the nuanced relationship of sisters - sometimes best friends, sometimes enemies, but always sisters first. Along the way, they discover the superpowers within us all.

About Sisters: The Summer We Found Our Superpowers (From NYICFF)

Vega, 9, and her wild sister Billie, 5, are going on an overnight outdoors hike in the lush Norwegian woods. The trip is full of exciting climbs, silly jokes and happy trekking until Dad pulls one acrobatic stunt too many, falling into a cave and injuring his leg badly. Unable to move, he asks Vega and Billie to get help. Anxiously retracing their steps, they know that everything depends on them now, as Vega tries to keep them focused on the goal despite setbacks, surprises, and Billie’s many distractions. They bravely face their fears, discover their superpowers, and find strength in their sisterhood.
