The Mitchells vs. The Machines - Image from New York International Children's Film Festival |
As part of the 2021 New York International Children's Film Festival, I had the chance to sit in on a sneak peek of the upcoming film, The Mitchells vs. The Machines. This was one of the most fun Q&A events I've been a part of with Mike Rinada and Guillermo Martinez, part of the creative team behind The Mitchells vs. The Machines, shared hilarious tales of making this film!
The Mitchells vs. The Machines will be coming to Netflix later in 2021 and promises to be a big hit with families. The movie tells the story of the Mitchell family, particularly focused on their daughter Katie. Katie is getting ready to head off to college. Always feeling a little "different," Katie is an artist and can't wait to go film school where she feels she will finally fit in. Her dad, hoping to reconnect with Katie and the family, decides that rather than flying across the country to head off to college, the whole family would make it a road trip. If past movies have taught us anything, cross-country family road trips don't always go as planned!
When AI robots prepare to take control of the human world, it's up to the Mitchell family to save the day. Focusing on themes of family, teamwork, learning to accept one another, and the power of technology, the sneak peek footage we had a chance to see looks funny and heartwarming. The visuals in the movie are also over the top with bright, bold colors bringing the Mitchell family to life.

About The Mitchells vs. The Machines (From NYICFF)
Produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse) and directed by Michael Rianda, The Mitchells vs. The Machines is an original animated comedy from Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix about an everyday family’s struggle to relate while technology rises up around the world! When Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (voiced by Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time.
