I remember watching The Mighty Ducks movies growing up and falling in love with Joshua Jackson and Emilio Estevez. The films combined my excitement for sports with a family fun spin. Recently, we introduced our boys to the movies on Disney+ and I was really excited to see a new Disney+ series, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers releasing. Would it live up to the originals?
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers - Episode 1 Review
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is a new Disney+ original series that is releasing episodes weekly during its first season. Episode 1 sets the stage for the next chapter of The Mighty Ducks. The infamous hockey team has grown into an elite program where sports-obsessed parents shell out big bucks and do whatever it takes to make sure there kid is "the best." Lauren Graham plays Alex, the mom of 12-year old Evan who finds himself cut from The Mighty Ducks. Frustrated by the culture of the program, Alex sets out to start her own hockey team for her son where things will be about love of the game. Unbeknownst to her, they end up at an ice rink and run into none other than Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez). He has sworn off hockey, but when introduced to Evan, Alex, and this new opportunity - will he rediscover his love of hockey too?

I watched the first episode with my six-year old son and as soon as we finished watching it, he restarted it again! Like most first episodes, there was a lot of "stage setting" which doesn't always mean that the story is action packed from the first moment. However, the opening episode was very relatable for kids and parents as it takes a look at the intense side of youth sports culture that is truly EVERYWHERE these days. Lauren Graham is also phenomenal as the mom in this movie. I loved her in Parenthood when that series aired on NBC, and this role seems very similar - a mom fights valiantly for her kid and sometimes stumbles to find the best way to show everything.
I can't wait to see where the story of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers goes and seeing more Emilio Estevez in the episodes to come promises to be a treat for fans of the original movie series.

With the help of Gordon Bombay, they rediscover the joys of playing just for love of the game.
