Ever had a big secret that you've had to keep from a good friend?  In Disney / Pixar's Luca, our main characters are experiencing just that type of dilemma.  Luca and his friend, Alberto, are setting out on their own in the small Italian town of Porto Rosso, but they're hiding something that may cost them everything - friends, family, and, maybe even, their lives.  Disney / Pixar's Luca releases on Disney+ starting June 18th.

Disney / Pixar Luca Movie Review

I have to be honest, the first part of this film had me feeling all kinds of The Little Mermaid vibes.  Underwater creature yearns to explore the world above the water - sounds familiar, right?  But the movie quickly shifts into it's own unique story as the character of Luca learns that he (and all of the sea monsters) have the ability to transform back and forth into human and sea creature forms.  Luca meets a new friend Alberto and starts spending more and more time above the water.  When Luca's parents find out, they fear for his safety and want to send him to "the deep" to protect him.  Luca decides to take matters into his own (human) hands and venture off into the human world, but the humans in Porto Rosso are on the hunt for sea monsters forcing Alberto and Luca to hide their true identities.

Luca explores friendship on so many different levels.  What draws people together?  How do friends work together?  What happens when friends fight?  It's a great movie for kids to explore the complexities of relationships with others in a way that they understand.  The story couldn't be more beautiful.

I really enjoyed the music and the animation as well.  The Italian theming is spot on - and now my kids also want a Vespa!  The film is funny, filled with family fun, and full of heart.  I'm sure our little sea monsters will be watching this one on repeat throughout the summer.  Disney / Pixar's Luca begins streaming on Disney+ June 18, 2021!

About Luca (From Disney / Pixar)

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film “Luca” is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca (voice of Jacob Tremblay) shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, Alberto (voice of Jack Dylan Grazer), but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.
