Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, the epic conclusion fans have been waiting for delivers all of the action and allure we've come to expect from the franchise.  My son was literally spellbound watching the scenes unfold and, whether this is your first encounter with Trollhunters or you've been a fan since the beginning, it is a delightful film for young audiences!  You can find DreamWorks Animation's Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans streaming on Netflix beginning July 21, 2021.

Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans Movie Review

I have to start my review by saying that the Trollhunters series have never been quite my personal cup of tea - the mythical creatures and magical storylines have pulled my kids in from the beginning, but I just haven't felt the same.  Regardless, I can appreciate when something is a hit for my kids and watching this movie was a reminder to me as a writer that we don't always connect with a movie or franchise personally, but we can still step back and be enamored with the work.  There's also some really great lessons in the film about heroic actions and friendship.

Let me start off by saying, the animation is beautiful - I mean really beautiful.  It's one of those movies where the characters are so well animated, you almost forget their animated and feel like they could jump out of the screen at any moment.  The colors are rich, deep, and dark adding to the mysterious and action-packed feeling of the film.  Speaking of action, there is plenty of that to keep the kids entertained!  Right from the beginning and throughout the film, my son was literally glued to the screen.

If you're not familiar with the Trollhunters franchise, no worries.  Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans is something you can watch as a stand alone film and follow the story.  I liken it a Marvel movie - an individual event that can be enjoyed for the story itself, however, fans who have been following along for years will have a deeper understanding and appreciation of the story.

Is Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans OK for your kids to watch?  More than likely, yes.  The biggest parent concern in the movie is the violence - there is a lot of fighting.  However, the mythological characters and highly imaginative story don't make it feel real like fighting or war scenes in other movies.  The characters and scenes can sometimes feel a bit scary, but nothing too over-the-top.  There was also a weird mini-storyline about pregnancy / childbirth that raised a few questions in my house.  Without giving too much away, it starts with some commentary about how (for this one creature's species) after the 7th kiss you get pregnant, leads to a rather unusual pregnancy and has a semi-messy childbirth.  My son picked up on the "quirks" of this and asked a few questions about where babies come from, if kissing is what makes you pregnant, and if birth is really that messy.

Overall, my son loved the latest and last Trollhunters adventure and, I have to say, even though I haven't been drawn into the franchise over the years, Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans was an adventure that even turned this cynic into a bit of believer in the power of magic and friendship.  Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans releases July 21, 2021 on Netflix.
