The next Star Wars series just debuted on Disney+. Obi-Wan Kenobi brings back Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to their prequel roles of Kenobi and Skywalker set 10 years after the Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. This highly anticipated series will surely be a must-watch for Star Wars fans, but can young padawans join the watch party too? Before we take a look at if Obi-Wan Kenobi is OK for kids, let's break down the first two episodes.

As Disney+ has done with recent series, we have weekly releases scheduled for new episodes. The first two parts dropped on May 27 and begin with a highlight reel from the prequel trilogy. This is certainly helpful for newbies who haven't seen Episodes I-III of the Star Wars movies. The series begins by showing us how the Sith has been systematically hunting and destroying what is left of the Jedi. Obi-Wan has escaped their efforts, at least for now, and is shown living alone - haunted by the events of Anakin's fall to the Dark Side. Keeping his promise to watch over Luke, he remains on Tatooine hiding in plain sight. Showing just how broken he has become, we hear Obi-Wan tell a young Jedi who spots him and needs his help that "The time of the Jedi is over." The glimpses of young Luke and Leia as precocious little kids is exactly the way you would imagine them growing up. Sneaking off, getting into a little "good trouble," and growing strong and smart. When a sharp-witted Leia is taken, the Organa's turn to Obi-Wan to help find her kidnappers. Will he be able to come out of hiding and be the Jedi he once was?

Obi-Wan Kenobi is seriously so good - I was immediately drawn into the story and loved seeing Ewan McGregor back in this role. I know the prequel movies get some hate, but I actually really enjoyed them and this continuation of the story has the wit we've come to expect from Disney+ series combined with the brilliant storytelling we love from the Star Wars saga.

Obi-Wan Kenobi begins with that glimpse back at the prequel trilogy including the battle between Obi-Wan and Anakin - including the graphic scenes of Anakin in the lava and his transition to Darth Vader. Throughout the early episodes, there are scenes of threats and violence as inquisitors travel the galaxy to search out and destroy what is left of the Jedi. There are a few lightsaber and gun battles, but nothing too graphic. The most intense scenes in the first episode include a lightsaber burning into a persons skin and an amputation of someone's hand. There is also a kidnapping which may be a little unnerving for children.

Other typical concerns in content appropriateness for kids are not concerns at all - no language, sex, etc. With the background given at the beginning of the first episode, your young padawans don't need to have seen the prequel trilogy to understand the story, but viewers who have will likely have a deeper appreciation and understanding of how these plot lines fit into the greater Star Wars saga. If your kids are Star Wars fans, I wouldn't hesitate to let them join in watching this with you!
