Netflix's newest family animated film, The Sea Beast, is full of adventure on the high seas. It's not uncommon for kids to grow up fascinated by tales of the dangerous that lurks just beyond our borders, but young Maisie Brumble gets to actually live those stories when she stows away on a ship and comes face to face with a creature she has previously only read about.

The Sea Beast wastes no time getting to the action as viewers are quickly drawn into daring battles between the sea beast and sailors. As I watched the first 15 minutes of the film, I couldn't help but have flashbacks of the Kraken in Pirates of the Caribbean as the sea beast viciously devours the ship and the sailors valiantly battle the creature. For all of the action that takes place throughout the film, parents don't have to worry about any violent scenes that are too much for young ones. There are a few small occasions of language though in the movie. For example, one of the sailors is quoted as saying "bring hell down upon it."

The overall message of the movie is a great one for young viewers (and a reminder for us adults too!). We grow up being told certain things about the people, places, and creatures around us. But is that the truth? Maisie and Jacob wrestle with their own preconceptions during the movie. It's amazing the power of a kid in showing adults the truth!
